7.62mm Lightweight Machine Gun
The MK48 is improved from the MK46 and scaled up to fire 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition. it was developed for use by USSOCOM. The aim was to produce a lightweight machine gun with the firepower of the M240 or M60. At the same time, the Navy SEALs also looking for a weapon that could replace M60/MK43

In 2001, the firearms manufacturer - FN, began working on the new weapon and the first improved model, the MK48 Mod 0 went into service with the Navy SEALs in 2003. Since then, the weapon has also been adopted by other special operations forces units, such as the 75th Rangers.
While developed as a weapon for SOF, the MK48's portability, firepower and range led it to being introduced for frontline infantry squads in Afghanistan to replace the M249 SAW.
