The traditional AK-74 comes in two versions: one with a fixed stock (AK-74) and another with a metal folding stock (AKS-74). The AK-74M, while similar in shape to the fixed stock version of the traditional AK-74, is equipped with a standard folding stock made of black fiberglass-reinforced polyamide resin, making it suitable for use by snipers, airborne troops, and other specialized units.
A rail for mounting night vision equipment and optical sights is now standard on the left side of the receiver. Optical sights such as the 1P78-1 Kashtan and the USP-1 (1P29) can be attached.
The handguard and grip retain the same shape as the later models of the AK-74, but the fiberglass-reinforced polyamide resin has been dyed black, replacing the dark brown color used in the later AK-74 models. Additionally, the bolt assembly has been lightened to reduce recoil during firing. The receiver cover has been reinforced, allowing the removal of the stiffening ribs found on the AKM model. Similar to the AKS-74 and AKS-74U, the AK-74M features a rotatable sling swivel on the right side of the stock near the receiver.
